  NEWS

A New Beginning for the Academy

As many of you know, Steve Denton left the academy in August of 2006 to take the men's head coaching position at Texas A&M University in College Station. During his time in Corpus, Steve was instrumental in bringing the facility back up to speed, speerheading the $500,000 bond issue in November of 2005 that saw major renovation to our facility, as well as being the principal figure in the fundraising and construction of the Sessions Pavilion. Steve also founded the Denton Di Laura Tennis Academy, predecessor to the current academy, with Carlos Di Laura and Cory Brooks in September of 2001. We wish him well in his new endeavor and thank him for all he did during his time at the tennis center!
In December the City of Corpus Christi named Cory Brooks as the Facility Manager for the H.E.B. Tennis Center. Cory will also assume the role as President of Premier Tennis, Inc. and Director of Tennis for the Premier Tennis Academy. The current staff will remain the same, with Alex Johansson directing the junior programs and Paul Cass directing the adult programs. Cory hopes to build upon the academy's past successes with the addition of new and exciting programs. We are very excited about the prospect of a long lasting relationship between Premier Tennis, Inc. and the City of Corpus Christi!

  PLAYERS JOURNAL

Rachel's Journal at Winter Nationals (12-29-05)
I'm having a good time at the Winter Nationals in Tucson. My parents and I drove for 15 hours on Christmas Day, because when I'm done with the tournament, we are driving to New Mexico to go skiing with some friends who are meeting us there. My first singles match was weird because it was against my doubles partner! We were evenly matched and I lost a tough battle 7-5, 6-4.

The H.E.B. Tennis Center has been a fixture in the landscape of Texas tennis for more than 40 years. The tennis center boasts 21 lighted, laykold outdoor tennis courts as well as a pro shop, lounge and full locker room facilities. The most recent addition to the center is the Mildred and Lloyd Sessions Tennis Pavilion, a $1.4 million covered facility that houses 3 covered courts, brand new locker rooms and bleacher seating for the covered courts as well as an observation deck over looking four of our outdoor courts.

The facility also is home to the Jim Greenwood Memorial Stadium court which can seat up to 2500 people for high profile events. From 1998-2000, the Greenwood Stadium played host to the Omni Living Legends Benefit, an exhibition designed to raise money for tennis programs benefiting underprivileged children in our area. During that three year period, tennis fans in South Texas were treated to exhibition matches that featured John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors, Monica Seles and Lindsay Davenport, and Jim Courier and Carlos Moya.

In its history, the H.E.B. Tennis Center has also hosted prestigious events such as the Southwest Conference championships, the NCAA Men’s Division I national championship and the Omni National Small College Championships. Annually, the tennis center hosts over 15 adult and junior tournaments, including the H.E.B. Collegiate Team Championships. This event hosts 16 NCAA Division I men’s teams each March and is the longest running men’s team tournament in the country!

Lastly, the tennis center is the home facility of Tennis Success, a program run by Corpus Christi native and former junior program participant Ronald Elizondo. This program is privately funded and provides free tennis lessons to inner-city children.

As you can see in our gallery, the tennis center is a hub of tennis activity year-round! For more information on the tennis center and its programs, call 361-882-6013. Pro shop manager Dee Dee Brooks and her staff will be glad to assist you!
