A New Beginning for the Academy
As many of you know, Steve Denton left the academy in August
of 2006 to take the men's head coaching position at Texas
A&M University in College Station. During his time in
Corpus, Steve was instrumental in bringing the facility back
up to speed, speerheading the $500,000 bond issue in November
of 2005 that saw major renovation to our facility, as well
as being the principal figure in the fundraising and construction
of the Sessions Pavilion. Steve also founded the Denton Di
Laura Tennis Academy, predecessor to the current academy,
with Carlos Di Laura and Cory Brooks in September of 2001.
We wish him well in his new endeavor and thank him for all
he did during his time at the tennis center!
In December the City of Corpus Christi named Cory Brooks as
the Facility Manager for the H.E.B. Tennis Center. Cory will
also assume the role as President of Premier Tennis, Inc.
and Director of Tennis for the Premier Tennis Academy. The
current staff will remain the same, with Alex Johansson directing
the junior programs and Paul Cass directing the adult programs.
Cory hopes to build upon the academy's past successes with
the addition of new and exciting programs. We are very excited
about the prospect of a long lasting relationship between
Premier Tennis, Inc. and the City of Corpus Christi!

I'm having a good time at the Winter Nationals in Tucson. My parents and I
drove for 15 hours on Christmas Day, because when I'm done with the
tournament, we are driving to New Mexico to go skiing with some friends who
are meeting us there. My first singles match was weird because it was
against my doubles partner! We were evenly matched and I lost a tough battle
7-5, 6-4. » read

Steve brings a wealth of knowledge and experience
in the sport of tennis to our students and our coaches at
the academy. He plays a major role in setting the standards
for our players in the areas of technique and strategy. In
addition to serving as a primary coach to a handful of students,
Steve is also active in our fundraising and international
player programs.
Steve, originally from Driscoll, Texas, has
served as the Director of Tennis at the HEB Tennis Center
for the past 14 years. Prior to becoming the director, Steve
was a four-time state singles champion and a former All-American

Steve went on to compete on the pro tour where his highlights
included being a two-time singles finalist at the Australian
Open as well as US Open Doubles Champion with fellow Longhorn
Kevin Curren. Steve was ranked #1 in the world in doubles
and as high as #11 in singles. From 1998-2000, Steve was the
lead organizer of the Living Legends Benefit, which brought
John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles,
Jim Courier and Carlos Moya to compete in fundraising exhibitions.
In the summer of 2001, Steve was hired as Head Men’s Tennis
coach at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. In the spring of 2005,
the Islanders achieved a school record in the NCAA rankings
by reaching #20 in the nation. In February of 2002, Steve
