A New Beginning for the Academy
As many of you know, Steve Denton left the academy in August
of 2006 to take the men's head coaching position at Texas
A&M University in College Station. During his time in
Corpus, Steve was instrumental in bringing the facility back
up to speed, speerheading the $500,000 bond issue in November
of 2005 that saw major renovation to our facility, as well
as being the principal figure in the fundraising and construction
of the Sessions Pavilion. Steve also founded the Denton Di
Laura Tennis Academy, predecessor to the current academy,
with Carlos Di Laura and Cory Brooks in September of 2001.
We wish him well in his new endeavor and thank him for all
he did during his time at the tennis center!
In December the City of Corpus Christi named Cory Brooks as
the Facility Manager for the H.E.B. Tennis Center. Cory will
also assume the role as President of Premier Tennis, Inc.
and Director of Tennis for the Premier Tennis Academy. The
current staff will remain the same, with Alex Johansson directing
the junior programs and Paul Cass directing the adult programs.
Cory hopes to build upon the academy's past successes with
the addition of new and exciting programs. We are very excited
about the prospect of a long lasting relationship between
Premier Tennis, Inc. and the City of Corpus Christi!

Rachel's Journal at Winter Nationals
(12-29-05)
I'm having a good time at the Winter Nationals in Tucson. My parents and I
drove for 15 hours on Christmas Day, because when I'm done with the
tournament, we are driving to New Mexico to go skiing with some friends who
are meeting us there. My first singles match was weird because it was
against my doubles partner! We were evenly matched and I lost a tough battle
7-5, 6-4. » read

In September of 2001, the Premier Tennis Academy was launched in an effort to put South Texas area players on a more level playing field with other academies across the state. The academy was founded on three main principles:
To bring the top players from Corpus Christi and the surrounding area together at one facility
To increase the amount of quality practice time our players were spending on the court
To provide players with experienced and professional coaches deeply committed to their development
Four years later, the academy has proven to be a big success! Over 200 area juniors ranging in age from 5 to 18 have taken part in our program, and over 50 of them have competed at the super championship level in Texas as well as nationwide. The academy has already produced a singles and doubles national championship, with former student Chong Wang winning the 2001 Winter Super National Boy’s 14’s singles and doubles titles. Chong is also one of fifteen of our graduates to have gone on to receive scholarships to play at the collegiate level. The academy also has a strong commitment in furthering the tennis education of minority players in our area. The Academy has granted 10 full scholarships to exceptional minority players in the South Texas area since its inception.
By assembling the top junior players in our area who
are willing and committed to reaching their best and providing them
with experienced, professional coaches, there is no doubt that the
Premier Tennis Academy has set the standard for junior tennis in
South Texas!
